Working with Schools
Splat Cooking’s Schools Programme is aimed at teaching children about where food comes from as well as how to prepare and cook it safely and hygienically whilst having fun.
We have a range of stimulating and educational workshops to be run in the school day which we build into areas of the curriculum including geography, history, maths & languages.
Fair Trade Workshop – run in conjunction with Divine Chocolate using their farms in Guana as a case study. We explore what fair-trade means and its importance and the children cook a chocolate treat and take part in tastings. For older children this can be considerably expanded to encompass the science behind chocolate making.
Student Survival workshop – designed to prepare students for cooking on their own during further education. With tips and techniques on ingredients and budgeting they are taught a selection of cheap, nutritious and tasty meals.
Science & Senses workshop – exploring how our senses affect our enjoyment of preparing and eating foods and the science behind food – such as those foods that go from liquid to solid and back and the reactions that take place inducing cakes to rise and bread to prove.
We also run after school cooking clubs:
These sessions are 1 hour long during which the children prepare and cook one item to take home. Whilst the food is cooking the children take part in tastings or food experiments or complete a worksheet relevant to the item they have cooked. All the recipes and worksheets are designed by year group so older children will be making more complicated items than the younger children. The recipes are a mixture of sweet and savoury and are based on seasonally available products in addition to teaching the children basic techniques such as rubbing in, creaming and kneading.
